Why do bosses take prospective clients out and play golf during the business day at company expense?

Many are gone an entire day or at least a half day, and surely include the lunch or dinner tab. Isn’t there a less costly way to do business and to keep the rest of the employees from .being jealous that their boss has gone out to play golf all the time? What’s wrong with meeting in the office and catering the meal in so they can stay focused on their agenda and accomplish more work in less time to save their company money? Do customers/clients have to be “bought” with all of the “extras” nowadays???
